The RAS,
Restroom Association (Singapore) collaborated with Qihua
Primary School to commemorate World Toilet Day by
holding its annual LOO
(Let's Observe Ourselves) Awards at a school for the first time. Qihua Primary students were present to showcase
innovative games they had conducted at preschools to educate preschoolers on restroom etiquette. At the LOO Awards
ceremony, a total of 39 recipients were recognised with 9 outstanding
preschools and 10 schools awarded for the first time.
For the award ceremony in 2015, preschools
and schools were included, to better recognise their crucial role of
educating the younger generation. Schools have been our strong strategic
partners since the launch of our school programme in 2005. We started
with only one school in 2005 and we have since expanded to more than 200
schools. We know students are our best ambassadors to promote good
restroom culture. They are great influencers to their peers, family
members and the community.
Prior to the award ceremony, SurveyMonkey, as part of its
corporate social responsibility initiative, collaborated with us to
launch an online survey in October. From the survey results, we observed
a number of changes in toilet standards, public awareness and user
behaviour. In general, we observed that the user behaviour of respondents
who knew about RAS was better than those who did not. The RAS thus
unveiled its 5-year action plan of evolving as a toilet hub - a hub for
all toilet matters concerning building owners, cleaning attendants and
public users.
Our action plan has been given a boost with
owners requesting their cleaning service providers to approach RAS, to
train and assess their cleaning attendants for the Singapore Workforce
Skills Qualifications (WSQ) Perform Basic Cleaning of Washrooms
module. The first exemplary owner is the National Library Board, which
requested its service provider, CBM, to send 17 attendants to be trained
and assessed in November. This was followed by The Shoppes at Marina Bay
Sands in December. As we welcome the New Year, we look forward to
collaborating with both existing and new partners to jointly actualise
our action plan.
