The
latest study results by the Singapore Management University (SMU)
revealed the Toilet
Cleanliness Index (TCI) of coffeeshops was stagnant as in 2020 at
about 47%. The RAS, Restroom Association (Singapore) thus launched the
LOO (Let’s Observe Ourselves) Campaign @ Coffeeshops at its 15th LOO Awards on 16th November. The
coffeeshop campaign, which duplicates the holistic approach of the LOO
Campaign @ Hawker Centres, is targeted to end in 2026.
With the latest TCI study results, we hope to first
work with low-rated coffeeshops on a similar approach to rectify the
lapses and achieve positive results like our hawker centre campaign. Same
as in previous years, we supported Ms Rosie Ching, Principal Lecturer of
Statistics of SMU, with the latest TCI study, by training the SMU
undergraduates on restroom assessment in August. I wish to congratulate
Ms Ching and the undergraduates, who worked tirelessly on the study, for
receiving their awards at our 15th LOO Awards.
RAS also launched the coffeeshop campaign in support
of the Clean Public Toilets Campaign by the National Environment Agency
(NEA). Both our coffeeshop campaign and the NEA campaign were launched by
Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and the Environment Mr Baey Yam Keng. I was also invited to One Punggol
Hawker Centre to join Mr Baey at the launch of
the NEA campaign and to interact with the patrons at the hawker centre by
distributing education tissue packets to them. We hope with concerted efforts
from everyone, all public toilets, especially coffeeshop toilets, can
truly become restrooms which provide a better user experience for
everyone.
