RAS nominates five Happy Toilets for ASEAN Public Toilet Awards

In April last year, through the National Environment Agency, RAS was invited by the Singapore Tourism Board to nominate five awardees for the ASEAN Public Toilet Awards. The awards would be presented during the ASEAN Tourism Award held in Vietnam on 18th January. The public toilets to be nominated should preferably be at locations frequented by tourists. Five Happy Toilets,  which were also past award recipients of our LOO (Let’s Observe Ourselves) Awards and frequented by tourists were nominated as follows:

·         The Shoppes at the Marina Bay Sands with the highest 6-star Happy Toilet rating accumulating a score of 104 out of 108

·         Sentosa’s Palawan East with the 5-star rating and a score of 100

·         Sentosa’s Palawan West with the 5-star rating and a score of 101

·         Merlion Park with the 5-star rating with a score of 99

·         Koufu’s The Gallerie foodcourt @ Marina Square with a score of 98

The criteria of our Happy Toilet accreditation, which had been favourably and highly regarded by the judges, was very similar to the judging criteria and requirements for the ASEAN Public Toilet Awards. As our Founder Mr Jack Sim said, “Without good toilets, tourism can’t thrive… Toilets are part of the holiday experience.”

RAS supports the Pubic Toilet Cleanliness Campaign

RAS was involved as one of the panel speakers at the Wanbao Coffeetalk session which saw about 350 readers turning up at Heartbeat @ Bedok on 12th January. RAS shared about its Guide to Better Public Toilet Design & Maintenance with special mention to the importance of providing a one-stop design of having the hand dryer, soap dispenser and wash basin within close proximity to prevent wetting of floors. The Happy Toilet standards were also made known to the readers.

RAS also elaborated on its engagement with 60 schools every year to educate the students through projects such as toilet decorations, poster designs, toilet inspections especially cleaning attendants’ appreciation to show kindness to the attendants and keep the toilets clean. The topics of discussion covered included public toilet standards, user education from young and good toilet etiquette such as proper handwashing to prevent the spread of illnesses. Apart from RAS, other panel speakers were practitioners from the medical, social service and cleaning profession.

RAS garners support from LOO (Let's Observe Ourselves) Awards recipients in educational video filming

In its bid to raise awareness about the Public Toilet Cleanliness Campaign so as to educate and encourage the public to practise good toilet habits, RAS actively approached its LOO Awards recipients Star Volunteer Derek Cheung and LOO Kidz Kaylea Toh to be featured on a series of videos as volunteer and advocate for public toilet cleanliness. 23-year-old Derek Cheung, who is not only our Star Volunteer but also our Volunteer Leader, actively trained other volunteers to conduct mystery audits and spot checks on Happy Toilets. Prior to playing the role as our Volunteer Leader, he had conducted mystery audits at more than 30 MRT stations, shopping centres and office buildings.

11-year-old Kaylea was an active Art Club member has contributed her artwork in toilet decorations for the past two years. She also conducted a morning assembly talk on adopting good toilet etiquette and showing kindness to cleaning attendants in her school. As a strong advocate, she continues to constantly remind her friends to wash their hands and keep the floor dry. She walks the talk of showing kindness to the attendants by greeting them amicably and helping them with litter picking. For her efforts, she was recognised as a LOO Kidz last year.

RAS extends its outreach to preschools and schools

At the NEA preschool networking session, RAS set up a booth to invite participating preschools to sign up for its Happy Toilets @ Preschools Programme. The teacher's handbook & children's booklet, which were launched in August last year, were showcased for the first time at the event. During breaks, long queues were formed at our booth with close to 30 preschools signing up for the programme. RAS partners Dyson Airblade hand dryer distributor VISO and 3M Professional Interior Hygiene Coating distributor Jestac, were also present to showcase their products. RAS has participated in this preschool event since 2010.

The following month in February, RAS was invited to Evergreen Secondary School to a sharing session with a cluster of schools’ Operations Managers. The following information was shared with the managers:
