Projects & Activities - Community Year 2011

Zhenghua Primary School's Open House & Bukit Panjang Community Racial Harmony Day

Following a successful partnership in the previous year, RAS was once again invited to participate in Zhenghua Primary School's Open House. The school collaborated with RAS to put up an Outreach Exhibition during the Open House. This exhibition sought to project the school's efforts in inculcating in students best practices about toilet hygiene and etiquette and promote the cleanliness of public toilets to all Zhenghua stakeholders.

Visitors to the booth including the event's Guest of Honour, Mayor for Northwest CDC, Dr. Teo Ho Pin, were given a tour of the beautiful art work created by the pupils and an impromptu lesson in restroom hygiene. Visitors were also given souvenirs for participating in the tour but more importantly they left with a stronger understanding of Zhenghua Primary's desire and hardwork in maintaining their STAR rated restrooms and communicating the need for restroom cleanliness and social graciousness. On a side note, we also participated in Qihua Primary School's pre-school Open House event in August. RAS looks forward to more community events with Zhenghua Primary and other schools.

Action for Earth Affair 2011

RAS commemorated Action for Earth Affair 2011 with a week-long exhibition at Orchard Central from the 16th to the 21st of May. The affair, organised in collaboration with the Hemisphere Foundation, aimed to create awareness about daily environmental issues like recycling and conservation. During the week-long event, the RAS Learning Pavilion tracking the developments of restrooms in Singapore and our growth were put on display. Loo Quest, a game originally initiated by us, was also played to interact with the public and increase awareness about hygiene in our most 'sacred' place.

Attractive prizes of bathroom accessories worth more than $800 were sponsored by Crizto for a toilet photo competition while Initial Hygiene sponsored hand sanitizers for the event. The event was also supported by a number of high profile Singaporean leaders including Dr Amy Khor, who was then the Minister of State for the Environment and Water Resources, personally came to visit the exhibition. Mdm Cynthia Phua, Grassroots advisor to Aljunied GRC extended her support by being the Guest of Honour for the event.

Youth for the Environment Day

In the early morning of 23rd April, at the invitation of the National Environment Agency (NEA), RAS set up an exhibition booth in conjunction with a mass beach cleanup activity at East Coast Park to commemorate the Youth for the Environment Day (Y4E Day). NEA successfully garnered the support and participation of more than 800 participants from 14 schools and 3 companies for this mass beach clean up activity. RAS not only showcased its current environmental programmes and initiatives but also provided a live platform for participants to pen down their feedback and comments.

Mr Lim Biow Chuan, who was then the Grassroots Advisor and Member of the Parliament for the Marine Parade GRC, graced the event under the company of Mr Andrew Tan, the Chief Executive Officer of NEA. Both took the lead to scout the beach for litter after flagging off the participants. Y4E Day is an initiative by the NEA with the objective of encouraging young Singaporeans to take ownership of the environment by safeguarding, nurturing and cherishing it for present and future generations. It was launched on 20th April in conjunction with the 2011 EcoFriend Awards.
