RAS gears up for World Toilet Day (WTD)

Prior to designation of 19 November as World Toilet Day (WTD) by the United Nations General Assembly, RAS had been planning to organise the inaugural Singapore WASH Conference, LOO (Let’s Observe Ourselves) Carnival and Hawker Centre Happy Toilet Cleanup to commemorate WTD. Key highlights of the conference are the LOO Awards ceremony and the third edition of the Guide to Better Public Toilet Design & Maintenance which was first published in 1999.

Apart from RAS, organisations presenting at the conference are Association of Consulting Engineers (ACES), Building & Construction Authority (BCA), Lien Aid, National Environment Agency (NEA), Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) and World Toilet Organization (WTO). With HDB as the venue sponsor, the LOO Carnival will be held at five shopping malls from 21 October to 24 November to raise public awareness about World Toilet Day. The key message this year is “Ignite a SPARK – Share, Promote & Adopt Restroom Kindness”. 51 hawker centres under the Happy Toilet Programme (HTP) were invited to participate in a Happy Toilet Cleanup on World Toilet Day. Members of Parliament (MPs) were also invited to helm the cleanup at their respective constituencies where the hawker centres are located.

RAS shares its campaign efforts with internet channel Toggle

On 26th July, a crew team from Toggle Talk arrived at RAS office for an interview filming session with RAS. One of the talk show episodes covered the topic on campaigns in Singapore. RAS was invited to share its views not only about campaigns in Singapore but also its self-initiated campaigns over the years. RAS shared about its first initiated LOO (Let’s Observe Ourselves) Campaign which was launched in 2008 and the LOO @ Heartlands Campaign in 2010. The launch of the above campaigns also underscored RAS’ ground efforts in reaching out to owners, cleaners and public users to each fulfil their roles.

Apart from sharing its campaigns, RAS also showcased its other campaign-supporting initiatives such as its LOO Whiz Facebook game and LOO Connect Android smartphone app which had been actively engaging the public. RAS concluded its interview and reiterated campaigns were launched as a timely initiative to raise public awareness to take certain ownership. No one would have suffered from campaign fatigue if everyone has been actively taking ownership and playing their part. RAS promotes some of the decorated washrooms of its school partners

Have you ever stepped into a washroom and were greeted by cute kittens? Opened a cubicle door and got blown away by beautiful paintings of Singapore’s world renowned attractions? RAS now offers all our readers a peek into what some schools have done to decorate their washrooms. Using some examples from Jiemin Primary, Unity Primary and Bedok Green Primary, RAS hopes that other schools and perhaps some offices might use these examples to inspire them also decorate and enhance their washroom spaces.

One of Jiemin Primary School’s many decorated washrooms has its walls adorned with pictures of adorable kittens. This volume of cuteness is certain to be a good fix for any person in a foul mood. By the way, these decorations are mounted onto the walls of a boys’ toilet. Unity Primary School students have demonstrated their artistic prowess in painting cubicle doors with pictures of Singapore’s famous attractions and landmarks. The Night Safari, Merlion and even those spikes of the Esplanade ‘Durian’ are clearly featured. As for Bedok Green Primary school, its students have adopted the characters of the animated movie ‘Despicable Me’ to help spread its messages of washroom cleanliness and using such popular culture to assist with gentle reminders certainly helps. Stay tuned for more featured decorations and school projects in subsequent issues.

Featured school from our STAR (Sustaining Toilets As Restrooms) programme

As a new component of our e-newsletter, RAS features one of its school partners to celebrate its achievements in promoting good personal hygiene and washroom cleanliness. Holy Innocents Primary School has been a valued partner since 2008 and has extended its efforts beyond the school to actively promote washroom hygiene. Aside from performing admirably in the STAR Programme for schools, Holy Innocents Primary has successfully undertaken a number of ‘firsts’ and established a number of milestones that cleverly conform to its school vision and values.

Over the years, the school has sought to inculcate environmental awareness and National Education messages to its students via the decorations seen in the washrooms. The school has also annually shown appreciation to its support staff, especially the washroom cleaners by holding events and programmes such as visits to Sentosa. In 2009, the student hygiene ambassadors visited Jamiyah Childrens Home to help reinforce the idea of good personal hygiene to the residents there and decorate their washrooms to enhance their environment. RAS salutes the efforts of Holy Innocents Primary School and looks forward to the continuation of this successful partnership.
