2013
was an eventful year for the Restroom Association (Singapore) or RAS with
new initiatives launched such as the inaugural Singapore
WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) Conference and the 3rd edition
of A Guide to Better Public Toilet
Design and Maintenance. As we embarked on our
new journey this year, we are already actively planning to forge concrete
partnerships with other government agencies, educational institutions and
private companies to jointly develop more impactful initiatives.
As
we evolve into a one-stop solution provider offering holistic solutions
to building owners, we have begun to reap the results by achieving
another milestone in the Happy Toilet Programme (HTP) with
a workers’ dormitory coming onboard the programme for the first
time. The HTP were also shared with a project team from the Malaysian
Institute of Industrial Technology (UniKL MITEC), which was on a study
trip to Singapore, to look at effective means of increasing the level of
customers’ satisfaction on public toilets in Malaysia.
Though
we observe ourselves as a one-stop solution provider, we also seek to
rebrand ourselves as a Voluntary Welfare Organisation (VWO) addressing
human-welfare issues. After successfully applying to the National Council
of Social Service (NCSS) as an Associate
Member last year, we have also successfully applied to be part of the
Care & Share Movement to
receive a matching grant from the
government for donations raised by RAS to appreciate the efforts of
cleaning attendants.
While
initiatives targeting building owners and cleaning attendants are
essential, we believe that user education is paramount to the
sustainability of restroom cleanliness. Therefore, we not only engaged a
class of Swiss Cottage Secondary students to actively volunteer for our
activities. We also continued to participate in the Singapore World Water
Day event to educate members of the public about the importance of restroom
cleanliness and good restroom practices. This year, we hope we are one
step closer of actualising our vision of fostering a gracious society
embracing excellence in restroom culture.
