RAS releases its first comprehensive toilet survey results

On 14 March 2012, we organised a media conference to share the findings and recommendations of a survey study conducted by a class of 21 graduating students from the Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Business & Accountancy. The survey consisted of 5 core sections as follows:

A) Toilet happiness

B) Facilities, design and maintenance of toilets

C) User experience

D) Awareness, education & enforcement

E) User and cleaner behaviour

Based on the survey findings consolidated by the students, we proposed a holistic approach to enhance the standard of the restroom environment as follows:

1. Mandatory rating scheme for toilets

2. Continued government intervention and enforcement

3. Specialised training of restroom attendants

4. Higher toilet design guidelines

5. Effective public awareness and engagement

We conducted a briefing for the students in October last year to facilitate their preparation. The survey was conducted in late December last year and an in-dept analysis of the findings was presented to us in February this year. At the same time, in recognition of their pro-bono work, they were presented with certificates of appreciation.

RAS participates in the filming of a German TV programme

On 28 February, we were approached by Mrs Nici Vitense-Lukat, a producer from ARD German Television, for one of the news programmes on Singapore’s concerted efforts to achieve the goal of good hygiene and restroom etiquette. RAS was cited by her as a leading force in achieving this goal. The filming which commenced on 6 March consisted of a tour of two Happy Toilets namely a 5-star Happy Toilet at the Koufu’s foodcourt in Tanglin Halt followed by a 3-star Happy Toilet at the Broadway’s foodcourt at Dover Crescent.

A mock-up Happy Toilet assessment of the 5-star toilet conducted by our staff was filmed followed by an interview session at the 3-star toilet with our President Ms Tan about her views on the local restroom environment and our active involvement. The filming concluded with another interview session at the Great World City with our Founder Mr Jack Sim about the World Toilet Summit organised by the World Toilet Organization.

RAS hosts study visit for Lien Aid’s Vietnamese delegates

We were approached by Lien Aid to host a one-day study visit for a group of Vietnamese delegates on 24 February to showcase our Happy Toilet Programme and STAR (Sustaining Toilets As Restrooms) Awards Programme for schools. The delegation went on a restroom tour at the CHIJ Our Lady Queen of Peace that was awarded the Platinum and Gold Star for their participation in the STAR Awards Programme. The delegation was also provided with handy information about the school’s active engagement in its restroom decorations. After the school’s visit, the delegation visited a 5-star toilet at the Chinese Garden and engaged in active conversations about the prerequisites of meeting the 5-star standard.

The delegation was impressed with the 5-star toilet and the presence of a grey water recycling system developed by the Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The water recycling system, which they believed, would serve as an inspiration for their students to be more innovative. The group consisted of government official Deputy Director Mr Nguyen from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, a Goodwill WASH Ambassador, a group of youths and camera crew. They were in Singapore for a week and Lien Aid aimed to provide them with a good learning opportunity and knowledge sharing platform on conditions and initiatives of water and sanitation in Singapore.

RAS reaches out to ITE colleges and schools

While we continue to promote our STAR Awards Programme to more primary and secondary schools, in the month of February we also reached out to five ITE colleges in Macpherson, Bishan, Balestier, Tampines and Yishun. Apart from educational talks, exhibitions about the sanitation history of Singapore and restroom etiquette were also displayed at high student traffic locations. These activities with the ITE colleges were well received and it was further planned for similar activities to be organised at the five colleges again in the month of May.

In the same month of February, a group of students from Service and Citizenship Society of River Valley High School (RVHS) invited us to their second Service Learning Festival (SLF). A talk was conducted for students and a booth space was allocated to us to showcase our volunteer programmes and activities. The aim of the festival is to allow the CIP leaders of RVHS to gain more exposure to Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs). The festival serves as a networking platform for students to volunteer with respective VWOs in an area that piques their interest or engenders passion.

RAS participates actively in Singapore World Water Day 2012 and Eco Day Out 2012 @ South West

For the second consecutive year, we were invited to organise educational activities at its booth at the Eco Day Out 2012 event jointly organised by the South West Community Development Council (SWCDC) and the National Environment Agency’s South West Regional office. Our partner AirSanz (SEA) also supported the event by educating visitors about its cleaner and greener hand dryers. Eco Day Out is an annual event to highlight and educate the community on environmental issues like recycling and conservation. This includes celebrating the achievements of the South West district.

For the first time, our positive partnership with the PUB has evolved to joint community outreach with our participation in the Singapore World Water Day at the Marina Barrage. Apart from inviting visitors to take our survey results, our partner Qool Enviro also invited female visitors to embark on their first experience with the P-Mate, a device for women to urinate while standing. The World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of water and advocating for the sustainable management of water resources. Activities in line with PUB’s ABC Waters Programme were organised island wide at waterways and reservoirs.
