The RAS, Restroom Association (Singapore) is introducing a new LOO (Let’s Observe Ourselves) Kidz category under its LOO Awards this year. Nominations are opened for primary schools to nominate outstanding students who have displayed strong commitment and passion in executing restroom-related projects. We are honoured to have Senior Minister of State for the Environment and Water Resources Dr Amy Khor presenting the awards this year.

We firmly believe the most effective method of user education is not solely on instilling good restroom culture from young but more importantly, engaging the young in impactful activities and projects. Recently, owing to the strong support from the National Environment Agency’s (NEA) Hawker Centres Division, students were actively involved in cleaning two hawker centre restrooms to better appreciate the arduous work of cleaning attendants.

As a supporter of the 30 Hour Famine Camp organised by World Vision Singapore from 10th to 11th June, we approached the NEA Hawker Centres Division to allow participating students to clean the toilets at two hawker centres namely Chomp Chomp Food Centre and Serangoon Garden Market. This was followed by a group of Nan Chiau High students in end June, as part of the Citi-YMCA Youth For Causes, to raise funds for us to recognise the cleaning attendants.

Education of the younger group namely the preschoolers, should not be neglected. Therefore, under our Happy Toilets @ Preschools Programme which was launched in February last year, a handwashing activity and toilet learning journey were also organised for the first time, to provide preschoolers with first-hand experience of finding germs in toilets and the importance of proper handwashing.

With the introduction of the new LOO Kidz award category, we look forward to receiving many nominations from schools as we aim to promote better user education by engaging students in projects and activities, which we would like to reiterate, is the most effective method of user education.
